Former Arsenal player Andrei Arshavin has joined a long list of people who have criticised German international playmaker Mesut Özil for his style of play. Özil has sparked divisions among fans and pundits in recent months following his activities on the pitch (when he played) and off it.
Despite the technical ability he possesses to individually dictate a football game when the midfielder is out of form, it is always so glaring as he becomes a frustrated figure on the pitch much to the annoyance of fans and past players who have turned pundits.
Before he was banished from the Arsenal team, after putting pen to paper on his most recent contract, he showed lacklustre performances and fans were calling for him to either up his game or dropped straight to the bench. However, after becoming an outcast from the first-team, many have missed him dearly as Arsenal have struggled to break down teams; something Özil used to do effortlessly on his day.
Arshavin has now weighed in on the topic, making his opinion known that he is not much of a fan of the German. Arshavin played for four years at Arsenal and also shared the pitch alongside current head coach Mikel Arteta.
The Russian believes the London Club are right to have gotten him out of the team and called for him to be sold as soon as possible. He lamented that Özil does not contribute so much to the team and even slows down play while also not taking enough shots in games.
Had it not been for his fat paycheck, it is understood that the Gunners would have sold him off as different clubs have registered interest in him both from the Premier League and abroad. Özil himself is reported to want a move away and is still looking for a destination to live to.
