Liverpool attacker Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has revealed the most embarrassing moment of his professional career which happened during his time at Arsenal in 2014. The game was Arsene Wenger's 1000th in charge of the Gunners, and the result probably remains etched in the minds of the club's faithful.
Arsenal had made the short trip to west London to take on rivals Chelsea, and the game started in the worst possible fashion as Samuel Eto'o and Andre Schurrle handed the Blues a 2-0 lead in just the seventh minute. Things only turned worse for the Gunners as they eventually succumbed to a 6-0 defeat.
Despite Arsenal suffering one of their worst defeats in club history, the game was overshadowed by a howler from referee Andre Mariner who mistakenly sent off Kieran Gibbs instead of Oxlade-Chamberlain for an intentional hand-ball offence.
Gibbs' decision was overruled following an appeal but The Ox admits that the situation was pretty embarrassing, he said, "I thought I was [Gianluigi] Buffon in goal at Stamford Bridge and I tipped the ball around the post. Then Kieran Gibbs got sent off instead of me. I went to the referee to try and tell him it was me, but it was mistaken identity. He didn’t want to know. That was pretty embarrassing."
After spending three additional years with the Gunners, Oxlade-Chamberlain opted for a fresh challenge with Liverpool in the summer after they assured him of regular football in midfield. Oxlade-Chamberlain had found success playing as the right wing-back for Arsene Wenger's side, but he wanted to test himself higher up the pitch.
Meanwhile, his compatriot Gibbs also sealed a switch away from the Emirates after he fell below the likes of Nacho Monreal and Sead Kolasinac in the pecking order for the left wing-back spot. The Englishman is currently in the ranks of West Bromwich Albion, where he has been allotted with additional set-piece taking duties.
